Specialty Pharma and Patient Engagement: The Key to Enrollment and Adherence Success

Specialty Pharma and Patient Engagement: The Key to Enrollment and Adherence Success
5:03
Most manufacturers will tell you if they get a 25% to 30% enrollment into these programs, they consider that a success. That shouldn't be considered a success. At D2, we're working hundreds of different products and stakeholders seeing as high as 80%+ enrollment with patients.

Several instances I’ve been asked: what the biggest challenges pharmaceutical companies will see in 2025 when it comes to patient engagement and adherence?

Well, it’s very simple – and it’s not new. It's called enrollment. In most patient care programs that are sponsored by manufacturers, the manufacturers spend hundreds of millions of dollars for these programs.

Most manufacturers will tell you if they get a 25% to 30% enrollment into these programs, they consider that a success. That shouldn't be considered a success. At D2, we're working with a variety of different products across various therapies and stakeholders seeing as high as 80%+ enrollment with patients.

What does it come down to? Patient engagement. When do you approach that patient, how do you approach that patient, and how do ensure that it’s truly supporting the patient’s individual care journey?

For manufacturers, understanding and addressing these challenges is no longer optional—it's pivotal. As we look ahead to 2025, two key trends stand out: the rise of ultra-orphan products and the need to address socioeconomic and healthcare literacy barriers. Both present significant opportunities to enhance patient outcomes and build lasting trust.

The Increasing Complexity of Ultra-Orphan Products

The growing number of ultra-orphan products approved for highly specific and complex conditions represents a shift in the pharmaceutical landscape. These treatments often come with intricate regimens that demand tailored patient engagement strategies.

For example, D2 works with a highly toxic oncology product that requires a seven-day on, seven-day off schedule. Success with such therapies hinges on consistent communication and education. Through daily engagement, patients are reminded not only of timing—like how food intake affects medication efficacy—but also of critical steps during off periods, such as refilling prescriptions or managing potential side effects.  D2’s involvement with this therapy underscores how an effective patient engagement environment can simplify complexity. By integrating these tools, manufacturers can ensure patients adhere to custom regimens, minimize risks, and achieve optimal outcomes. This level of personalized support is indispensable as more complex therapies enter the market.

Assisting Patients with Socioeconomic Barriers and Healthcare Literacy

Another pressing challenge is addressing the socioeconomic and healthcare literacy barriers that prevent patients from fully engaging with their treatment plans.

  • Financial Barriers: Patients are often unaware of affordability options such as co-pay assistance or patient assistance programs.
  • Healthcare Complexity: Concepts like prior authorizations, reimbursement processes, or even the roles of various healthcare stakeholders can leave patients confused and disengaged.

Effective patient engagement programs can bridge these gaps. By providing accessible education, manufacturers can demystify the patient journey, fostering trust and empowering patients to take an active role in their care. For example, integrating real-time educational interventions at key touch points can explain why certain steps, like timing medication or engaging with payers, are critical.

Moreover, as staffing shortages in physician offices and call centers continue to strain resources, a robust engagement platform can act as an extension of care teams, providing timely communication and support when and where patients need it most.

The Impact of Patient Engagement on Future Product Launches

Looking toward 2025, patient engagement solutions will become even more integral to product launches. Transitioning patients from clinical trials to commercial therapies can be seamless with the right engagement tools. Early education, affordability program enrollment, and payer collaboration set the foundation for a successful launch.

Additionally, the FDA’s increasing focus on real-world evidence, particularly for small patient populations, underscores the need for continuous patient monitoring. Patient engagement platforms not only gather essential data but also create a feedback loop that enhances the patient experience while meeting regulatory requirements.
